O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still at high school. The judges were impressed with her singing and she advanced to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was given high marks from the jury. But she was a victim of significant defeats during the Top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was on the third row, followed by the in the bottom two. It was a shock to the judges and they advised that people choose Melissa O'Neil, who was one of the contestants with the greatest ability to sing. O'Neil was always delivering top performances since then, never finished lower than the third place. After two more breathtaking performances on the 7th of September 2005, when O'Neil along with Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two contestants, judge Werner said that newspaper headlines will read: O'Neil defeated Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and the youngest winner of the show's time . O'Neil was contacted shortly after her win from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
